She gave her first public speech, Pennin Perumai (the Pride of Women), at the conference of the party that year.
She was made the Propaganda Secretary of the AIADMK in January 1983. As was chosen by Puratchi Thalaivar M.G.R., Jayalalitha conducted her first election campaign in
February 1983 for the party as a candidate in the by-election from the Tiruchendur Assembly Constituency.
Jayalalitha was elected for the first time as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1984 and she retained the seat till 1989.
In 1984, M.G.R. fell ill and moved to the U.S.A to undergo medical treatment. In his absence, Jayalalitha came to the forefront during the elections to the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly in Tamil Nadu in December 1984. That year, the alliance of Congress (I) and AIADMK secured a massive victory.
Puratchi Thalaivar M.G.R. expired in 1987, after which the AIADMK was split into two parties. The election symbol of the party, "Two Leaves", was frozen by the Election Commission of India.
Jayalalitha was elected as a member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1989 from the Bodinayakkanur constituency.
Jayalalitha was the first lady to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu.
The two factions of the party reunited in February 1989 under the leadership of Jayalalitha, who was unanimously elected as the General Secretary of the united AIADMK.
The election symbol of the AIADMK party, 'Two Leaves', was restored by her in 1989.
Jayalalitha directed the Congress (I) and AIADMK alliance to a historic victory in the 1989 General Elections to the Lok Sabha in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.
Under her leadership, the AIADMK secured victories in all the subsequent by-elections from the constituencies of Peranamallur, Madurai East and Marungapuri to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
A landslide victory was secured by Jayalalitha in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections held in 1991, when the party and its alliance won 225 out of the total 234 seats. She contested from two constituencies, Kangeyam and Bargur, and won both the seats comprehensively.
On 24 June 1991, she became the youngest ever and the second female Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She held the position till 12 May 1996.
She swept the 1991 General Elections by securing a complete victory for the AIADMK and its alliance partner INC in the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, thus creating history.
The 1998 general election of the Lok Sabha saw the AIADMK and its alliance securing 30 out of 40 seats.
The 2001 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections saw her leading the alliance to a win of 195 seats out of the 234 and her party, the AIADMK, alone secured 132 seats.
On 14 May 2001, Jayalalitha became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the second time and held the post till 21 September 2001.
In February 2002, she was elected from the constituency of Andipatti.
She remained the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 2 March 2002 to 12 May 2006.
The AIADMK alliance won 69 seats in the 2006 Legislative Assembly elections and Jayalalitha served as the Leader of Opposition.
Again in the 2011 Legislative Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK and its allies bounced back, winning 203 seats out of 234, with the AIADMK securing 150 seats on its own. The new government was formed on 16 May 2011 and Jayalalitha became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the fourth time.
Jayaram Jayalalitha had to step down from her post of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in September 2014 when a trial court in Karnataka held her guilty in an 18-year-old disproportionate assets (amounting to Rs. 66.65 crore) and corruption case. The court had sentenced her to a four-year jail term with a fine of Rs. 100 crore, but she challenged this verdict in Karnataka High Court.
On 11 May 2015, the Karnataka High Court acquitted Jayalalitha in the Disproportionate Assets case.
J. Jayalalitha was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for a record-equalling fifth time on 23 May 2015.
On 25 April 2016, she filed her nomination papers in R. K. Nagar ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The family had moved to Chennai after Jayalalithaa's father died when she was just two.

She was revolutionary and is said to have been the first to wear skirts on screen.
Jayalalithaa also acted in a few Bollywood films.

MGR died in 1987, in harness as Chief Minister. The next year the AIADMK split with one faction supporting MGR's wife Janaki and the other supporting Jayalalithaa, who laid claim to her mentor's political legacy.

In 1991, Jayalalithaa became Chief Minister for the first time. She lost the 1996 Tamil Nadu elections and the DMK government that succeeded her filed the corruption case that she was acquitted in earlier this month.

She won her second term in 2001 and her third in 2011.

Jayalalithaa, who is single, speaks English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi fluently. MGR is said to have sent her to the Rajya Sabha as she spoke English very well.

Even as an actress, she would always carry books with her to the studio, and would sit quietly by herself in a corner and read between shots.

Jayalalitha Dead on 5 december 2016 Chennai Apollo hospital

  1. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister dies 75 days after being hospitalised
  2. She was 68, immensely powerful and popular
  3. Was called "Amma", served four terms as Chief Minister
J Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and one of India's most powerful and popular politicians, died late on Monday in a Chennai hospital, nearly three months after she was admitted there. She was 68.

Ms Jayalalithaa had a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening and was rushed back to the Intensive Care Unit or ICU. Barely two weeks ago, after doctors and her party said she was fully recovered from a respiratory illness, she had been moved from the critical care unit to a private room kitted out with emergency equipment.

"It is with indescribable grief, we announce the sad demise of our esteemed honourable chief minister of Tamil Nadu at 11:30 pm (local time) today (December 5)," Chennai's Apollo Hospital said in a statement released to the media after midnight.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Deeply saddened at the passing away of Selvi Jayalalithaa. Her demise has left a huge void in Indian politics. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of grief. May the Almighty grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss with courage and fortitude," adding, "Jayalalithaa ji's connect with citizens, concern for welfare of the poor, the women and marginalized will always be a source of inspiration."

Ms Jayalalithaa was taken to Apollo Hospital on September 22 where she was admitted for dehydration and fever. Her condition soon deteriorated, and she was diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection. Specialists from Delhi's AIIMS hospital and a pulmonary expert from London were flown in for consults.

On November 20, in the clearest sign that they believed she was no longer in danger, doctors said Ms Jayalalithaa had been relocated from the Intensive Care Unit. They also said she was speaking occasionally and was alert. Her party had throughout maintained that she was directing important decisions from hospital including on a water dispute with neighbouring Karnataka.

For the centre and her own government, an over-riding concern apart from her health was the drafting of a contingency plan to prevent riots if her health deteriorated. Known as "Amma" or "mother" to lakhs of supporters, Ms Jayalalithaa's incredible popularity was often exhibited through dramatic fans prone to self-harm and violent attacks on public property when things went against her. Earlier this evening, when local channels wrongly declared her dead at about 6 pm, a brief riot erupted outside Apollo Hospital, receding only when officials declared she was still alive.

Jayalalithaa CM of TN Passes away dead

CHENNAI: J Jayalalithaa, the charismatic six-time Chief Minister who ruled the political arena and Tamil cinema world alike for decades on end, died at the Apollo Hospitals here on late Monday night, plunging Tamil Nadu and her party, the AIADMK, into a political crisis.

Jayalalithaa, 68, breathed her last at the ICU of the hospital at 11.30 pm where she was admitted on September 22, despite efforts to sustain her revival, the Apollo Hospitals said.

“This is with indescribable grief that we announce the sad demise of our esteemed Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Puratchi Thalaivi Amma at 11.30 PM today (05.12.2016),” the Apollo Hospitals said in an official release.

It said the Apollo Hospitals joins the nation and the people of the state of Tamil Nadu in deeply mourning her loss.

A political veteran, Ms Jayalalithaa achieved a historic milestone on May 19, 2016 when she led the AIADMK to a spectacular successive term on her re-election, a feat that was earlier achieved only by her mentor MG Ramachandran. A darling of the national media, Ms Jayalalithaa was hailed as an astute administrator and a shrewd politician, but her critics termed her arrogant and accused her of behaving like a monarch.

Ms Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening and was put on ECMO support since then. The Apollo Hospitals has been issuing periodical health bulletins about the Chief Minister’s health saying that she was very critical.

Update of Jayalalithaa health as she stays critical from Sunday evening

Update of Jayalalithaa health as she stays critical from Sunday evening

1) There was short panic after some Tamil channels and websites published reports of Jayalalithaa's death, which was rubbished by Apollo Hospitals. According to the hospital, the TN chief minister was still under life support though her condition was critical. An emergency meeting of AIADMK party members was also on to discuss a possible successor. The party, according to reports, may back O Panneerselvam, who has been Jayalalithaa's trusted lieutenant

2) Reports of Jaya's death sparked panic outside Apollo. AIADMK supporters, who have been on a vigil outside the hospital since Sunday, attacked security personnel.

3) The Centre dispatched a team of specialists from the All India Institute of Medical Science to Apollo Hospital in Chennai. The team includes pulmonologist Dr GC Khilnani, anaesthetist Dr Anjan Trikha, cardiac surgeon Dr Sachin Talwar and cardiologist Dr Rajiv Narang.

4) She had a heart surgery, her party said. According to party spokesperson CR Saraswathi, there was an angio procedure done on the chief minister early Monday morning

5) Jayalalithaa is on ECMO or Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation device. This is a life support system that helps provide oxygen to the body when the patient's lungs or heart are unable to do so. ECMO is put in place when the patient becomes unresponsive to conventional CPR or Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It works by draining blood from a vein and connecting it to an oxygenator machine. According to doctors, the patient can be on the device for several days or even weeks.

6) Sunday's development comes after a 3-member team was rushed in to Apollo on October 7, which included a three-member team of specialists – a cardiologist, a pulmonary specialist and an anaesthesiologist. The hospital had earlier flown in a doctor from London who specialises in critical care and multi-organ failure. Dr Richard Beale had been treating her ever since she was admitted to the hospital in September.

7) Apollo Hospital on November 4 had released a statement that Jayalalithaa had “fully recovered” and was now “conscious and aware of things around her. But she didn’t leave the hospital." A week later, on November 12, the hospital said Jayalalithaa was “fit to be discharged, and can leave whenever she wants to.

8) After weeks of confusion, Apollo came out with details of her treatment for the first time in the second week of October where the hospital said the treatment regimen included "continued respiratory support, nebulisation, drugs to decongest the lungs, antibiotics, nutrition, general nursing care and supportive therapy.”

The report made brief mentions of providing respiratory support to the TN CM, who has a history of diabetes.

9) Before Sunday's development, Jayalalithaa was very much working from hospital. On October 29, she signed her party’s election affidavits with her thumb print, and not her signature, because her right hand was swollen and inflamed, according to doctors treating her.

10) The state, however, has been put on high alert. Tamil Nadu DGP has ordered all police officers and personnel to be on duty. In a communication to ADGPs of Enforcement, CB-CID, Economic Offences Wing and Crime wings, the DGP's office today asked them to "mobilise all the officers in the rank of SPs and police personnel of other ranks of Enforcement, CBCID, EOW and Crime completely and they should report" to SPs and Commissioners of Police on Monday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening at 4.30 pm, and is currently being monitored by a team of experts, as per a statement issued by Apollo Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment over the past two months.
While there were updates in the morning that the 68-year-old Tamil Nadu CM has fully recovered and would be released shortly, the statement released by the hospital suggested that her condition is critical.
Here is a timeline of events that have taken place after she was admitted in the Apollo hospital in September, after complaining of fever and dehydration.

"There have been rumours and conjectures circulated falsely in the social media about Honourable Chief Minister's health condition, stating that she will be taken abroad for treatment. These are totally false and baseless," said the statement from the hospital.

  • October 1, 2016: On this day, Tamil Nadu Governor C VidyasagarRao visited Jayalalitha at Apollo hospital. The meeting happened a day after DMK president had demanded for an official statement about her health and also pointed out that no ministers have met the Tamil Nadu CM.
